Cool US History in Costa Rica

The Iran Contra Affair and Costa Rica

I remember in the late Eighties watching the Oliver North Trials on TV.  At the time I didn’t fully understand what was going on but it was interesting nonetheless.  I was a teenager in high school and a United States Lt Colonel was being ripped apart on national TV for his covert military actions. Maybe not that big of a deal today but back in 1987 this was pretty big.  If you need a refresher on the whole deal here is a good Wikipedia article about it –

SO….what does this have to do with Costa Rica you ask….here is the cool part.

A big reason this whole affair became public is because one of two C-130 Cargo airplanes that Oliver North was using in this covert operation was shot down over Nicaragua.  This was the beginning of the end of the operation and the other C-130 was left abandoned in a hangar at the San Jose airport in Costa Rica – there was private airstrip on a 30,000 acre ranch in Northwest Costa Rica that was being used to stay covert and supply the Contras in Nicaragua.  Fast forward to 2000 when some creative entrepreneurs bought the plane for $3,000, shipped it South, had it hauled up the side of a mountain in  Manuel Antonio, reassembled it and turned it into an amazing restaurant that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

And now, 30 plus years from when I watched the trials on TV in the United States, I live 45 minutes from this iconic Plane/Restaurant in Costa Rica.  It is a definite must see when you come to our little slice of paradise.  You can even sit in the cockpit!!
